Installing, getting used to and maintaining your hay net

A horse discovering the net may get impatient. A few steps make the transition easier and keep the net safe.

Installing

  • A solid attachment point, in a clear spot where the horse cannot catch a foot in the straps.
  • A net hung high enough and taut: when empty, it must not hang down to the ground.
  • Do not pack the hay too tightly: it must be able to come out strand by strand.

Getting used to it

  • Begin with a wider mesh, or a partly filled net, then tighten gradually.
  • At first, leave some loose hay next to it.
  • Keep an eye on the first few days: your horse should eat calmly.
  • The double mesh helps you move from slow intake to freer intake.

Maintaining

  • Rinse the net regularly, let it dry completely before filling it, and store it in a dry place.
  • Each time you fill it, check the meshes and attachments (straps or drawstring).
  • Replace the net if it is damaged.

Our advice

A hay net does not replace the ration. Do not reduce the amount of hay you give without the advice of your vet or an equine nutritionist.
